The Village Land Act 1999 – Is it Worth Protecting?

The Village Land Act 1999 recognizes land held collectively by village residents under customary law.  This gives villages the rights to the land that their residents have traditionally used and have been managed under customary principles.  The VLA 1999 is seen to contain significant elements of change providing for a devolved system of registration, titling and dispute settlement at the village level and recognition of customary tenure.  But with ongoing land disputes, many at the village level, it is worth questioning, “is the VLA worth protecting?” 
 
This breakfast debate will take a look an in-depth look at the Village Land Act 1999.  An expert will provide an overview of the Act itself, while another will provide an analysis of the Act – the pros and cons.  Through discussion and debate, the question will be explored – is the VLA truly pro-village?  Is it worth protecting?  Or, does it need some mending?
 
Mr. Yefred Myenzi, the Executive Director of HakiArdhi, will participate in thedebate, providing an expert analysis of the VLA.  Mr. Swagile Msananga from the Ministry of Lands will provide an overview of the Act.  TNRF will facilitate the debate.

Launch of tanzanialandportal and discussion of the ongoing amendment of the Village Land Act No 5

Tanzanialandportal is a new website, for accessing information and discussion of land related matters, which aims to facilitate collaboration, communication and effectiveness of organizations and institutions working within land rights Tanzania.

On 5th June it became official that amendments to the Village Land Act No. 5 are under review by the Attorney General (The Guardian, Kilimo Kwanza section, page 6). Therefore we, the civil society, need to get organized and influence the process NOW!

TNRF Learning Event: Wildlife Management Areas

Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) are provided for by the Wildlife Policy and Wildlife Conservation Act of 2009 as areas of village lands set aside for purposes of wildlife conservation.  They present a range of challenges, concerns and opportunities for communities in their ability to manage and benefit from natural resources, which significantly support their livelihoods.

World Environment Day (WED) 2011

5 June - World Environment Day

World Environment Day will start with a rally from Posta ya Zamani at 8:00 in the morning with people and stilt walkers carrying different messages to Mnazi Mmoja where the crowd will be met by a representative from the Regional Commissioner's office.  There will be speeches by the guest of honor and different NGO representatives, such as ForumCC and Citizen's Global Platfrom.
