Working Groups

Forestry

The Tanzania Forestry Working Group (TFWG), has been meeting regularly since August 2005. The TFWG was formed to address advocacy and awareness raising on critical forest management and governance issues. The TFWG is supported and facilitated by TNRF, but depends on the members of the group to set the agenda and carry out activities. Members of the group are all involved in forest management issues, either as organisations or as individuals interested in forest management in Tanzania.

Steering Committee

Welcome to the Steering Committee pages. This area of the website is confidential and for TNRF Steering Committee members only. There are three features for your use:
  • A private discussion forum for steering committee members (not viewable by others);
  • Key steering committee documents (such as meeting minutes etc);
  • An employee tracking facility - to enable you to find out where TNRF staff are.

Community-based Tourism

Community-based tourism is an opportunity for tourism companies to develop alternative models of making profit based on ethical dealings with rural communities and their natural resources. While potentially challenging and not necessarily straight-forward, ultimately community-based tourism can make a great deal of sense - it's good for business, good for local people, and good for the environment. Community-based tourism, if done well, can make a substantial difference in incomes for local communities and help improve natural resource management and conservation at local level.

Wildlife

TNRF is launching a new wildlife working group with a focus on human and wildlife conflict management. In recent years there has been increasing conflict between people and wildlife, partially caused by the rapidly expanding populations of both people and elephant among other species. For example, Tanzania's elephant population is reported to have grown from an estimated 55,000 individuals in 1990 to up to perhaps 140,000 in 2006.
