TNRF WINS AN AWARD AS A CSO WITH OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION IN NATURAL RESOURCES AND LAND RIGHTS.

The 7th Anniversary of Tanzania Human Rights Defenders was held on 2nd July 2021 at the Mlimani City – Dar es Salaam.  The theme for this year was “Chatting out the role of Civil Society sector in the implementation of the five years National Development Plan (2021/2022-2025/2026)”

The guest of honor, Professor Palamagamba John Kabudi, the Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, represented the Prime Minister Hon. Kassim Majaliwa.  In his speech, Prof. Kabudi urged organizations to be think tanks to improve laws and policy frameworks in Tanzania.

On this commemoration, the Norwegian ambassador awarded TNRF a certificate of recognition as a distinguished Civil Society Organization (CSO) with outstanding contributions in the Natural Resources Management and Land Rights category. This achievement resulted from the good work that has been done by TNRF among others; demarcation of dedicated grazing land for calves and weak/sick animals and sacred sites with total of 7,330 hectares and hosted the National Elephant Day and International Rhino Day in Tunduru District. Improved awareness of village land council and ward tribunal members on land conflicts resolution mechanism (sorted 11 cases out of 15). Capacities of Local and national government, CSOs and communities to implement Participatory Rangelands Management are strengthened. Other achievement include 60% of women in Pawaga and Kwamtoro, Iringa and Chemba districts respectively are aware of  rights over land access, ownership and control, approximately 40% of them in Pawaga division have certificate of customary right of occupancy (CCROs) either individually or jointly with their spouses. TNRF has also facilitated the communities with adaptation plans on how to respond to the effect of climate change. Enhanced knowledge on land and natural resource governance, land conflict resolution and women land rights to both traditional leaders and community members.

The event brought together representatives from the Government, Private sector, Development Partners, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs). NGOs that participated in this event include but not limited to  Save the children, Tanzania Network of Legal Aid Providers (TANLAP), Sanitation and water Action (SAWA), Tanzania Women Lawyers Association(TAWLA), Legal and Human Rights Canter(LHRC), SOS Children villages Tanzania, Women in Law and Development in Africa(WILDAF), HAKIELIMU, Women Action Towards Entrepreneurship Development(WATED), Open mind Tanzania
